by Tony Buchanon, on Aug 28

Luckily, becoming an expert is easier than you think, especially in an emerging industry without any prominent leaders. With new developments in technological and social spheres, there are plenty of up-and-coming industries to get into, from virtual reality to green energy, drones, biotechnology, and mobility technology.

Getting started

What if you want to be an expert in a field in which you have no experience? Well, you don’t need to be the one making the breakthroughs in the industry to become an authority. For instance, what do all of these industries have in common? They all rely heavily on marketing to grow their brand and reach potential users, investors, and buyers. As the new industry emerges, new marketing techniques must follow. This is a perfect opportunity to establish yourself as a leader in the field.

While previous marketing experience is beneficial, you can also pick up a class or two to brush up on the basics and build your new career from there. Open Colleges in AU and Media Training in the UK offers courses in social media that can help take your personal brand to the next level.

So, even if you don’t have extensive experience or knowledge in the field to start with, there are several ways you can get your foot in the door to prepare you for becoming an expert. Learn everything you can about the industry and keep updating that knowledge to stay on top of trends and developments.

Once you’re in, you can use some of the following strategies to establish yourself as an authority in the field:

Establish a personal brand

The first step is about laying a foundation. You need to establish a personal brand; after all, it’s all about getting your name out there. Start by working on your social media profiles, focusing on LinkedIn in particular. This is the perfect place for networking with others in your industry and offers you a relevant platform to showcase your career accomplishments, expertise, and experience.

When setting up your profile, try to use a professional headshot for your profile picture, which will help to add credibility. You should take time writing a compelling description and be sure to include any relevant skills. If you’re struggling to get endorsed for those skills, try endorsing other people’s skills first. Same goes for testimonials; if you do it first, people are likely to reciprocate.

LinkedIn is a great social networking site to use, but you should also see if there are any other social media platforms that work well for your industry. Consider who your target audience is and find out which social media sites they are using.

To build your following, make sure you become active and share news articles from your industry, offer tips and advice, ask questions, and share opinions. This will help demonstrate your knowledge and expertise and show you are up to date with what is happening in your field.

Start a blog

Social media sites are a great tool to use, but you should also consider creating your own blog. You can use this as a place to discuss the latest news in your industry, write articles that focus on offering tips and advice, and establish yourself as an expert in your subject matter.

While it’s best to update the blog regularly to ensure that the content remains up to date, if you’re limited on time, you can post evergreen content so readers will always have something of interest to turn to. Build up an archive of at least thirty posts to start.

Be sure to regularly share links of your blog posts on your social media profiles once you’ve published them. You should also comment on other blogs and social media groups to help get your name out and bring attention to your blog.

Publish articles

Don’t just publish articles on your own blog. Write for other blogs in your niche as well as larger publications to gain exposure with a larger audience. This is your chance to share your opinions and expertise with others, so be sure to put your best content out there.

Speak at industry events

People that speak at live events tend to be perceived as leaders or experts in their industry. Try to apply for relevant speaking opportunities where you can also network with others. The more people you know, the more authority you build.

Establishing yourself as an authority doesn’t happen overnight. It will require commitment, focus, different strategies, and a bit of trial and error. Get involved where you can, soak up all the industry knowledge, stay up to date on current trends, and work hard to build relationships. Once those doors start opening, you will see it was well worth the effort.
